German | English

My problem (which will first occur sometime in the middle of next year – but still):

Should I write my thesis in German or English!?!?!?

Advantages German:

  • It’s easier

Disadvantages German:

  • I’m horrible at writing – very!

Advantages English:

  • It’s more qualitative
  • If I might work in the US one day – they can read it
  • I can write better in English
  • There are a lot of English books on that subject

Disadvantages English:

  • I don’t know the technical term for a lot of words (which actually shouldn’t be a problem, seeing there are dictionaries and the employees all know the terms very well)
  • It might take longer to write
  • It might take longer until I know how I should put a sentence

*Sigh* What do you guys think?

Yesterday I started with the formatting of the thesis. I created a word file, created the cover sheet and created all the headings etc. It took a few hours. *Sigh*

  1. Judging by your pro-con lists, I say go with English.

In your list, German has 1 pro and 1 con. English has 4 pros and 3 con. If cancel pros with cons respectively, German has 0, English has 1.

Well that’s how it works in my head, lol.

If I were to write a thesis and had to choose between my mother tongue (Spanish) or English, I think I’d speak Spanish, because I know that my English is not good enough for writing. At least, not without lots of extra proofreading. But if you are confident of your English, and can get many proofreaders, I say go ahead with English 🙂

  2. Well, I have that problem myself, between Norwegian, English and Spanish. Problem with English is no matter how many times I read I am never sure the one who reads it is better than me.

I’d say go with English too, because of the same reasons Lene gave you. I, at the moment only write in Norwegian and get people to proofread it for me.

    Good luck 🙂

  3. I understand completely why it’s a hard decision. I am sometimes also thinking about starting to blog in Danish because in a way I feel I can express myself more in depth because I know exactly the words. The cons is that my feedback sphere would be limited to my mother… I hope you figure out what works best for you!

  4. man, I wish I could write all my school work in English, but no. My teachers require me to write in Finnish which is actually surprisingly difficult for me, given that it is my native language (I blame it on the blogging). So, I’d write the thesis in English, just for the hell of it 😛

  5. I think that writing the thesis in English would be more challenging (obviously) and it would be interesting for you to do. If you need help with sentence formation, you can always ask the girls over at Snark! I’m sure someone (if not, me) would be glad to help.

  6. Have you decided on this? I always thought that English was a standard for Thesis writing, but Im obviously wrong. My failed Thesis was written in English cos it was required to be in English (so was Thesis defense). I wouldve DIED if we had to write it in Filipino, as I suck in Filipino.
