What I miss about the States

A few weeks ago, while studying “business start-up” in the library, I started thinking about the States.

A lot of Germans I know, complain about that country, which has mostly to do with it’s governance though. I started thinking about the time when I lived in the States and then made a list, a list of things I miss and things I don’t miss.

The list is based on Austin, Texas, where I lived in for a year, in Sunshine Drive 🙂

Things I miss:

  • Taco Bell
Oh yeah, Taco Bell popped into my head first. I love that place. When I was hungry, let’s say, at 11.30 pm, I’d grab my keys, get into the car and pick up a Burrito Supreme menu with soft and crunchy tacos as well. Did I mention I gained 20 pounds while living there??
  • JCrew, Abercrombie & Fitch, Old Navy, Express
I still wear my JCrew Flip Flops, which are almost 10 years old now :). JCrew Flip Flops are my favorite and if someone of my family flies to the States I’ll order some items of JCrew online, get them shipped to the place my family members stay and have them bring me the items :D. A&F had great clothes, Old Navy had cute stuff, Express had lovely elegant clothes and accessories. I miss those shops.
  • The warm/hot weather every day
It’s 91 degree Fahrenheit in Austin right now. Need I say more?
  • The malls with the food courts
Malls <3 I love shopping under one roof. And the food courts were so yummy and great. I enjoyed eating there or just getting food for at home.
  • The friendly people
That’s something us Germans don’t know at all (at least I don’t know it from Germany). I did think that the people were a little too superficial at times, but that’s better than hafting to deal with grumpy people here in Munich.
  • The Mexican Food
Tacos, filled with eggs, for BREAKFAST???? That was my first thought. Now I love them. I make Mexican food every now and again, it’s just so yum and nowhere here you can get it so good like in Austin.
  • The opening hours of the stores
Going to HEB at 11pm? What a dream.
  • The Cheese Cakes
Need I say more? Such a yummy cake you’ll find nowhere here, only if you make it yourself. I tried to make it once, it was ok, but not as good as in the States.
  • Mangia & Kitchen Door
YumyumyumyumyumYumyumyumyumyum!! I used to work at Mangia @ Mesa Drive – gained about 20 pounds because I got all the food half price 😀
  • Smoothies
50 different types of Smoothies to chose from. What luxury.
  • Amy’s ice cream
    Best ice-cream and “ice-cream-putting-in-a-cup” EVER!
  • Bagels everywhere
Blueberry Bagels are my favorite. Toasted and with Philadelphia – Wonderful!

Things I don’t miss will follow – I need to go to work now.

  1. Last time I was there Chipotle became my new favorite place after my bro took me to one in Austin 😉 I love it much much more than Taco Bell because you can tell them exactly what ingredients you do and don’t want on your Taco or Burrito and it tastes godly. 😀

The food court in the big HEB was pretty awesome too. I had chicken with mac & cheese and that was so much that it lasted for two days (even though it didn’t look like much).

And of course the weather and the friendly people and the opening hours… I miss the States… 😉

  2. I know a lot of Europeans have a passionate hatred for the US which I understand but which makes me sad because the US has a lot of shortcomings but there are so many nice Americans and so many great things about the US too.

If I were to leave the US, there are SO many different kinds of food that I will miss from here. And I’ll definitely miss the friendly people. There are many friendly people from different countries but the US has some of the friendliest people in the world… at least I think so based on my experience with living in a different country.

  3. Well, I haven’t been to the States yet. I don’t know if I’d ever bother. Great opening hours are fantastic for a shopper like me, so I’m with you on that. Food? Well, I am not that much into food, just Italian.

I’d love to read your things-I-don’t-miss list.
About American people: I don’t like that many of them seem to think they’re the center of the universe, not knowing squat about other countries and where those countries are. They seem to be quite ignorant in many cases, but I’m sure not all of them are.
Well, I would probably make my list of things I think Americans suffer from…or something. Have a nice day!

  4. Texas is love because of HEB. LOL. MMM.. Mexican Food. If I were to leave Texas or the US completely, I’ll definitely miss that, as well. But unfortunately, I’m stuck here, for now.

  5. I think I need to move to the states, at least for a year, I’m thinking of maybe taking my masters, when I finish my bachelor, over there actually 🙂 mostly cause of the weather :p
I’ve heard people over there are friendly, us norwegians are so cold and little welcome towards strangers, so that would be nice 🙂

  6. Ah, Texas. I went to school there for my first year of uni, and man, I totally miss it. I’m not quite sure I miss the heat that much (Dallas in August? God, no), but I can definitely go for some good old TexMex right about now ;). I don’t think I’ve ever had Mexican food as good as the ones I had in Texas!

  7. you are so cute!! taco bell is delicious i don’t blame you for that! i see most of the list you liked the food here lol yeah it’s good but very very bad for you if you eat it to much!

  8. It’s true, the States rule hard core! Well, minus all the other countries hate us. I’m sad about that. I want to travel so bad but I’m afraid of how other countries will treat me since I’m American and honestly, I don’t speak any other language besides American Sign Language which really doesn’t count.

By the way…I <3 Taco Bell

  9. I know how it feels like to miss some of the stuff that you get used to so much. Me and my family move all the time so I experience this once in a while. I haven’t been to the States yet but I know most of the stuff that are listed here.

  10. ah, more reasons for you to come and see me!! haha!

yea, a lot of people overseas complain about the US government. i don’t really care much about politics. i don’t bother associating myself with it but only when needed LOL

  11. I don’t care about politics either. Just as long as the president doesn’t bring the US into hell. I’m okie. But besides the government. If I left the states to live in some other country I’d miss so much that are in California. The only thing I would not miss is the the smog I breathe in every day. Gross.
