Research Fun

As some of you know, I’ve started my lovely Thesis about TerraSAR-X on Monday.

Until now I’m doing researches, I went to the library and got lots of books about SAR, Radar… last week, I discovered Google Books I’ve been reading a lot.

Seeing I did quite some reading, I figured it was time to write the basic principles of SAR and Radar. So, full of enthusiasm I opened Word and then – then I just sat there. I didn’t know how to start and what the hell to write. I’ve heard that’s normal though, so I’m not worrying at the moment. I still have lots of time (which, I bet, will just fly).

Thanks again all Snarkers for replying to this thread. I ordered a Dell last night. They had an offering until February 26st, which made the laptop I ordered 60 Euro cheaper than usually. ❓

I tried to keep the laptop as cheap as possible, seeing I have a great Dell desktop (I prefer desktops) and only need the laptop for my thesis (how spoiled does that sound). Ah, I was so happy that during my five years of studying I wasn’t the typical student who had a laptop. I thought I’d never be the owner of one (well, I do have a laptop at the moment, it’s my mom’s with rocking 128mb RAM and 3GB disk space) and now, as of March 20th, I’ll be an owner as well. The laptop will cost me 600€ ((about $880, 450 pounds)), that’s money I currently don’t have and I’m happy to have an older sister who’s working and will lend me that money. I’ll pay her back on a monthly basis.

I actually didn’t want a laptop seeing I don’t need it necessarily (it’s just so much more practical), but now I’m looking forward to it.

As said above, I tried to keep the laptop as cheap as possible, I did order two luxury items though, I couldn’t resist.

The Flamingo-Pink Cover (I’m such a sucker for pink 🙂 )

A glossy true-life screen (also after reading this blog entry)

It’s the Inspiron 1525 with Vista Home Premium (I can’t wait to see how that OS looks like) it has a 15.4 inch screen, 2GB RAM, no dual-core processor and no camera (who needs a camera).

Do you prefer laptops or desktops? Why?

  1. OMG! You got the PINK one?! I so want that!! *is jealous!* I have a laptop that I got in October. Mine is an HP running Vista. It’s been great, especially since it was free! 😀

Have fun with your research and I bet you come up with a lot of great things to write. The time will definitely fly though!

  2. I totally submitted my comment before answering your question. *blush*

I prefer desktops for the simple fact I am weary of saving everything on a laptop for fear it may get dropped and crash. I’ve only had my laptop since October, but I usually only use it for surfing the internet and playing games on it. It’s handy to take on vacation though. I can upload the pictures from my digital camera right away and start organizing them so I don’t have 1000+ pictures to go through once I’m home. 🙂

  3. Ooh, I want a pink laptop! Pink is awesome. 😉 I prefer laptops because they’re cuter (heh, I’m a sucker for aesthetics), they’re more portable, and I don’t really need a more powerful desktop because I hardly do anything other than do papers and projects for school and surf the ‘net randomly. Right now I have a chunky HP Pavilion that I treat more as a desktop (it always stays on my desk because it’s just so big and heavy compared to other laptops), but when I go to college, I’m getting a MacBook.

    Good luck with your thesis!

  4. I have a desktop, but I really want a laptop for when I am off running around. Plus with wireless router on my pc I would be able to work in any room of the house…in case let’s say I had writer’s block and needed a change of location.

  5. Congrats on the new laptop, I hope it turns out to be good! I’m sure it’s going to look sooo cute with its pink cover :3

By the way, I hadn’t seen Google Books before, I clicked it see what it was about, when I’m suddenly attached to e-reading a book on semantics. I think I’m hooked 😛

  6. I love laptops. Mostly because I don’t have space for anything bigger, but laptops are cuter :P. And I have decorated mine with stickers *blush*

Good luck with your thesis. I should start doing mine pretty soon too *is horrified*

  7. I actually posted a blog entry recently about desktops and laptops, asking which people preferred. I couldn’t decide which to get, but I think I might end up getting a laptop. Yours LOOKS nice, but I will NEVER guy a Dell EVER AGAIN! (VERY bad experience with them).

  8. Right now, I’d go for a laptop. I wanted to order the one you order, in pink, but I’m afraid I might grow out of the color afterwards. So I might be going for the black one or the blue.

I love Dells, although we’ve had some bad experiences with them.

    Congratulations !!

  9. Ooh, the pinkness is so cool! I love colourful things.
I like laptops better, because you can take them anywhere. Desktops have zero mobility. Although I may be a little biased because my desktop is old and clunky and my laptop is a Mac, so… you do the math. 😀
